How does modern church history shape today's Christian beliefs and worship? In this course, Dr. John Tweeddale explores the development of Christianity from the Reformation to the present day.

 

Throughout this course, you will learn about:

 

  1. Significant people, writings, places, events, and movements in church history from the Reformation to today.
  2. Key theological developments and controversies, especially pertaining to the formation of the Reformed confessions and the rise of modernity.
  3. The analysis of primary source material by learning about reading texts in contexts (TIC).
  4. The way that church history informs Christian beliefs, practices, and worship today.

Course Information:

  • The spring 2025 semester occurs from January 13, 2025 through May 16, 2025. Lectures will only be available to view during the semester.
  • One lecture is uploaded per week and viewable during the duration of the semester. Each lecture is about two hours and forty-five minutes long.
  • This course will be taught in alignment with Ligonier Ministries’ statement of faith and the consensus of the historic Reformed confessions as recorded in the Three Forms of Unity, Westminster Standards, and the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith.

 

About the Instructor:

Dr. John W. Tweeddale is vice president of academics and professor of theology at Reformation Bible College. He is also a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He previously served as senior associate editor of Tabletalk magazine, as senior pastor of First Reformed Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, and as adjunct professor of systematic and historical theology at Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He earned his M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss., and his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is author of John Owen and Hebrews and coeditor of John Calvin: For a New Reformation and the T&T Clark Handbook of John Owen.
